Sometimes the biggest impact can be found in the smallest moments.
A child making their own bed for the first time and helping clear tables in a shared community space. The quietest child in the classroom stepping forward to lead their team through a search and rescue challenge. A nervous pupil arriving worried about staying away from home for the first time, only to leave three days later covered in mud, camouflage paint, laughter and confidence. A child in a wheelchair reaching the top of a climbing wall alongside their peers, perhaps for the first time in their life.
These moments might seem small, but they represent something much bigger. Confidence growing. Friendships forming. Independence developing. Children discovering what they are capable of.
At a time when childhood is increasingly shaped by screens, rising anxiety, financial pressures and fewer opportunities to explore the outdoors, we believe experiences like these have never been more important.
Barnstondale exists to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, ability or personal circumstances, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive through outdoor learning.
For many of the young people we support, a residential visit is far more than a school trip. It is their first time away from home, their first experience of true independence and often the first time they discover strengths they never knew they had.
These experiences help build confidence, resilience, aspiration and the life skills that children need to navigate an increasingly complex world.
They are also the reason our bursary scheme exists.
Since 2020, Barnstondale has supported more than 5,500 disadvantaged and disabled children and young people to access outdoor learning experiences through our bursary scheme.
Every year, around 6,000 children and young people visit Barnstondale. Around two-thirds come from disadvantaged backgrounds and one in four has a disability or additional need.
We know that for many families, the cost of a residential trip can feel out of reach. Increasingly, we are seeing working families struggle to afford opportunities that were once considered a normal part of childhood. At the same time, schools are facing significant financial pressures, making access to outdoor learning more challenging than ever.
Yet we believe outdoor learning should not be viewed as a luxury.
Research continues to highlight rising anxiety levels, declining school attendance, increasing use of technology and growing concerns around children's confidence, resilience and wellbeing. At the same time, opportunities for free play, adventure and independence are becoming harder to access.
We believe every child deserves the chance to experience challenge, adventure, friendship and belonging. Not only because these experiences create memories, but because they help develop the confidence, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills that support social mobility and help young people thrive later in life.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, schools told us they were seeing increasing need among the children they support. Confidence had been knocked, educational inequalities had widened and many families were facing financial hardship.
We knew something had to change.
That's why we developed our bursary scheme, ensuring that children are not excluded from outdoor learning because of their circumstances.
Since 2020, supporters, donors and income generated through the centre have helped us invest £279,096 into ensuring more children can access the life-changing benefits of outdoor learning.
The result?
More than 5,500 disadvantaged and disabled children and young people have been able to experience the magic of Barnstondale.
Teachers regularly tell us about the changes they see.
Children who are usually quiet becoming team leaders.
Young people who struggle in the classroom finding confidence outdoors.
Friendships forming between children who may never have spoken to one another before.
Children returning to school with a greater sense of independence, self-belief and aspiration.
"The bursary was invaluable as many of the children would never have been able to afford to attend. They experienced time away from home with their peers without the feeling of missing out." – School staff
"It is so important for our children to be given opportunities to grow and develop outside of the classroom and in environments that are not always available in their day to day lives." – Headteacher
"For many of our families, opportunities like this simply do not exist elsewhere. Barnstondale provides a rare chance for children with complex physical needs to experience adventure, friendship and independence together, creating memories and connections that last long after the residential has ended." – Disability Youth Organisation
Return on Social Investment
Research suggests that every £1 invested in outdoor learning generates £4.32 in social value through improved wellbeing, educational outcomes and reduced pressure on public services. Based on this benchmark, Barnstondale's bursary investment of £279,096 has generated an estimated £1.2 million in social value.
But for us, success has never been about the numbers alone.
It's about making sure every child gets the chance to belong, to explore, to learn and to grow. It's about ensuring that a child's opportunities are not determined by their family's income, their postcode or their ability. It's about giving children the chance to discover what they are capable of and raising aspirations for the future.
As we enter our sixth year of fundraising for the bursary scheme, we remain committed to removing barriers, improving accessibility and creating opportunities for children who need them most.
Because every child deserves the chance to experience the life-changing power of outdoor learning. And because no child should be left behind.
